September #Bookadayuk - Day 26

Tales from Ovid - Ted Hughes

I love Ted Hughes' poetry. His language is very direct but still lyrical. Savage, raw, and always down to earth. Yeah, he's a Yorkshireman all right.

And this works so well in his retelling of 24 of Ovid's most violent and disturbing tales.

The moment Echo saw Narcissus

She was in love. She followed him

Like a starving wolf

Following a stag too strong to be tackled.

And like a cat in winter at a fire

She could not edge close enough

To what singed her, and would burn her
