August #Bookadayuk – Day 11

Atonement - Ian McEwan

When I first moved here I was living in a large apartment building and decided to join its book club as a way of meeting new friends. We were quite a diverse bunch - different nationalities, ages, and reading habits. One woman only read James Patterson. Another only read romance. My tastes veer towards the classics, so it was quite tricky picking a book that would appeal to everyone.

One of the earliest books we read was Atonement by Ian McEwan. It had romance, history, an unreliable narrator, and a completely gobsmacking ending. And it didn't half get us talking. In fact it completely ruined every single book we read after that, because no matter which book we chose, by the end of the evening we were usually back to discussing Atonement.
