THE NOVEL YOU WISH YOU'D WRITTEN
The Handmaid's Tale is one of the most important novels of the twentieth century, and I wish I'd written it.
I dithered for ages between this and Nineteen Eighty-Four. Both are set in a scarily plausible dystopian future, and both have made a lasting impression on me. And Orwell’s book was so influential, that many of its words and phrases have made it into the English language.
But the reason I chose Atwood’s novel is because I am a woman. The events in this book really could happen, and in fact, some of the things in this book have happened and are still happening to women around the world. And it scares me and angers me.
