Bloody hell, but this was a tough call. I have so many favourites that honestly I had no idea who to choose.

How can I choose between my tragic 19th century gals? And if one of them gets my vote, then Jane Eyre is left on the sidelines.

Or between my two favourite detectives, Thursday Next and V I Warshawski?

And how about all the amazingly strong women and girls in YA, such as Hermione Grainger, Lessa, Lyra Belaqua, Katniss Everdeen, to name but four.

Then from my childhood, there's Mary Lennox from The Secret Garden, but that means Anne Shirley misses out.

Nope, sorry.  I can't do it.   I have so many favourites for so many different reasons, it's completely impossible for me to pick just one.
