DAY 9 - A BOOK YOU THOUGHT YOU WOULD HATE BUT ENDED UP LOVING
Wow. I reckon this was the challenge that gave me the most difficulty.
House of Leaves was recommended to me by two friends whose judgement on books I can usually trust, so when I came across it while browsing in a bookshop I bought it without even looking at it.
When I got home I started flicking through the pages, and my first thought was, OMG what the hell have I bought? Because on on the surface it just looked so pretentious. Different fonts, single words in the corner of pages, pictures, diagrams, fragments of text, footnotes within footnotes etc etc.
It sat on my bookshelf for nearly a year before I eventually read it. And when I did, I realized it was fantastic. It's a horror story, a love story, and much more. The odd formatting doesn't detract from the story. It adds to it, sucking the reader into the story.
So M and E, I'm sorry I doubted you. As usual you recommended a winner. Even though I didn't realize it as soon as I should have.
