Ghost Stories and Haunted Houses : The Haunting of Hill House, Shirley Jackson

"Journeys end with lovers meeting"

Wow! This was so very, very good. And absolutely bloody terrifying. 

I didn't write much about this when I first finished it, because it's one of those books where I have to sit and think about what I've just read. And my thoughts were whirling all over the place.

The writing is gorgeous and so atmospheric. The scenes where Eleanor and Theodora were in the room listening to the commotion going on outside were truly scary, and then it got even more frightening when the banging stopped and all they could hear was something trying to get in.

Little pattings came from around the doorframe, small seeking sounds, feeling the edges of the door, trying to sneak a way in.

I don't want to say too much more because I really think this should be read without knowing anything about it. But believe me, it's good.
