And what a great book with which to end 2014.
I've read six of Steinbeck's books this year, and while I've completely been won over by his lighter side, it is The Grape of Wrath and now East of Eden that will be staying with me for a very long time.
There are so many memorable characters, some good, some bad. All with their flaws and all with their redeeming features (well, apart from Cathy that is).
I loved Cal who struggled with his dark side and who was desperate for his father's attention. And also Lee, the wise Chinese servant who hid his learning and wisdom beneath a veneer of pidgin English.
When I drew this book out of the Candy Bowl back in October, I have to admit my heart sank a little bit as I wasn't sure I could face 600 pages of unremitting doom and gloom, but as I was coming to the end I found myself wishing there was more to come.
