A Book a Day - Day 24

Selected Poems - D.H. Lawrence

THE BOOK THAT MOST REMINDS YOU OF YOUR ENGLISH TEACHER

Ah, Mr Neale. I still haven't forgiven you for doing this to me. Why in the name of all that’s holy did you pick D H Lawrence - Selected Poems for my 'O' Level poetry set text? All the other English groups studied Nine Modern Poets and got to read poetry by W. B. Yeats, Wilfred Owen, T. S. Eliot, John Betjeman, W. H. Auden, R. S. Thomas, Dylan Thomas, Philip Larkin, and Ted Hughes, while all I learned was that Mr Lawrence should have stuck to writing novels.

Seriously, I have a lot of time for Lawrence the novelist, but as a poet he doesn’t really do it for me. A lot of his imagery makes me wince, and he uses way too many exclamation marks. I keep expecting a 'ZOMG!!!' to crop up.

But I agree with the sentiments in this one.

Talk

I wish people, when you sit near them,

wouldn't think it necessary to make conversation

and send thin draughts of words

blowing down your neck and your ears

and giving you a cold in your inside.
